Neil Cruickshank, Joseph Narsapur and Aidan McMahon - Architecture

How can buildings contribute to both the physical and social regeneration of rundown areas in Scotland? That's the question final year architecture students Joe Narsapur, Neil Cruickshank and Aidan McMahon have been addressing in their final year projects.

Joe and Neil, both from Dundee, focused on the Port Dundas area of Glasgow, setting of the acclaimed Scottish films Ratcatcher and Young Adam. They have designed a cultural and congress centre and a cultural/education quarter for the area - civic buildings that would bring about urban renewal, and generate income for community activities.

Aidan, from Northern Ireland, has designed an extension to Paisley Town Hall, in the form of a contemporary arts centre. Aidan's design is part of a group project to rejuvenate this area of Paisley, creating a cultural quarter that would re-connect outlying areas of the town with the centre.

The School of Architecture

The School addresses many complex issues: organisation, spatial, formal and material expression, technology and the balance between internal and external environments. Only an architect is trained to have this holistic understanding of building design and its study involves a combination of analysis, understanding and problem solving. All year 5 students' work is based on unit specialisms: urban, technology, social architecture and building regeneration. Thesis projects are this year based in Dundee, Paisley, Leith and Port Dundas, Glasgow.
