Dean Robertson CERAMICS

a photo of dean robertson work

Dean, 30 from Tayport in Fife, has used a fascination with the animal kingdom as his starting point, focusing specifically on colourful and exotic birds and their elaborate courtship rituals. He says, "These fascinating birds share similarities with the human condition. When humans and birds begin their journey for a mate they enter the bizarre world of courtship. My aim is to trigger the viewer’s imagination by way of narrative." Pieces such as the one pictured, in which Dean has fused the human and bird form together, represent the similar way in which both species strive to attract a mate using posture, facial expression, plumage/dress - all carried off with colourful flamboyance.

Following his graduation Dean will be working from a studio at Rait Antiques Centre, Perthshire.

Emma Barfoot CONSTRUCTED TEXTILES

a photo of emma barfoot work

Emma’s work is inspired by the human need for relaxation and well-being. Having studied the design of the multi-sensory room (MSR) for the recreational use of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities she became very aware of the relaxing potential of stimulating the senses. Emma, from Co. Londonderry, said, "The MSR is often used to have a calming effect on people with behavioural problems but, on visiting such facilities, I became convinced of the potential benefits of such stimulation for the well-being of us all. My challenge has thus been to design fabrics for the home which are highly tactile and pleasurable to touch, but which also somehow stimulate the other senses; sight, sound and smell."

Vicky Carruthers CONSTRUCTED TEXTILES

a photo of vicky carruthers work

Everyone has little domestic rituals, but when do they become compulsive? When do they consume one’s life? Cleanliness is a virtue but when is clean too clean? Vicky, 22, from Penrith, Cumbria, says, "I am interested in the repetitious, compulsive nature of domestic chores, in particular cleaning. This notion of repetition is an intrinsic part of the textile processes which I use in my work." Vicky has created pieces using dental floss, a task made possible following the kind donation of 15kg of floss from a manufacturer!

She will begin a postgraduate course at Goldsmiths College after graduation from DJCAD.

Jill Skulina INTERIOR & ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

a photo of jill skulina work

Over the last year of her degree, Jill has been researching her own history by exploring her own memories, her family tree and anecdotes from family and friends. The research eventually took the form of a collection of 40 rag dolls. Jill says, "I picked six dolls for my degree show - three are representative of emotions brought about by events which have stuck in my mind: a termination, the death of my sister and a family trip to Poland. The other three dolls represent a diary of the emotions I was experiencing due to recent personal events. The dolls are all contained in individual boxes, which relate to the narrative of the doll they protect." Jill, 29, from Dundee, plans to continue her studies at Duncan of Jordanstone after graduation by undertaking a Master of Design.

Lisa, 23, from East Kilbride, received the RSA Student Design Awards’ Unilever - Home and Personal Care Europe Attachment Award worth £2,550. The brief was to take the traditional soap bar and make it appealing again. Lisa’s answer to this brief was Rubadub soap crayons, which aim to make bath time fun, by applying colour to the skin when used with water. There are seven crayons in the pack which each have their own personality ranging from immaculate to downright dirty. The packaging is made from environmentally friendly plastic combined with a strip of rubber bath mat, which can also be used as storage for the soap, and stuck to the side of the bathtub. Lisa’s attachment will last for 14 weeks and take place in the European Development Organisation of Unilever in Port Sunlight and Italy.
