On with the new - logo unveiled The University's new corporate logo is published here for the first time. After months of behind the scenes work, the wraps officially come off the new identity this week when it is launched. Over the coming weeks and months, signs, stationery, publications, websites, videos, are all set to change. Even the famous blue carpet at Ninewells could be restyled as the rolling programme of implementation continues. The smart, new, streamlined logo has already been warmly endorsed by the University Court as better reflecting the image of the University of Dundee as it enters the 21st century. Gone are the tramlines, the many variations and the controversial upper case " O" in "Of". Retained, refreshed and approved by the Lord Lyon is the University Shield of Arms, with the addition of a dynamic motif and a full professional housestyle to complement it. Said Principal Sir Alan Langlands: "This stylish new logo reflects the professional excellence at the core of the University. It draws on the expertise of the graphic design department in the Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone College and elevates the identity of the University to a level more in keeping with its position as one of Scotland's leading five centres of teaching and research. What we are introducing here is more than just a logo; it is a fresh look at the way we wish to be perceived through every aspect of our communications. The new style sharpens our competitive edge in further developing our role within Scotland's knowledge economy." Deputy Principal Bill Barr, who is responsible for coordinating the introduction of the new identity said: "After months of consultation, audit and careful thought, we're delighted to have reached this stage. Now the hard work of implementation begins." The design team of David Herbert, Gary Gowans and Jim Campbell have been working flat out to meet the launch deadline of 4 December. A launch pack which explains the rationale behind the scheme will be sent to every member of staff. A series of seminars introducing the new corporate identity will be offered to staff across the University by the design team. Corporate manuals will be available and the web will also be used to disseminate information on the scheme. Media Services will play a central role in implementing and ensuring the new styles are used appropriately. Among the innovations is a redesigned range of stationery featuring full colour, monochome blue and monochrome black versions. Bill Barr: "The adoption of the new corporate style will give us a standard format throughout the University in keeping with the best business and design practice but in addition, it will make us more efficient and will provide unified branding. Individuals and departments will not have to reinvent the wheel each time they use the logo. The design guidelines initially in the manual, and later on the web, will make this process much easier." "The new style will take a little time to implement across the University. There will no doubt be many questions and points to resolve in the process. We would ask staff right across the university for their patience and - just as important - for their co-operation in what is a complex as well as an exciting programme."
