Well above average

Last month the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council announced allocations of £616 million to higher education institutions for the coming academic year - the University of Dundee receiving an above average share, the third highest percentage increase in the sector.

Vice-Principal, Professor David Swinfen commented: "We are pleased to note the allocation to the University of Dundee is up 2.9% which compares well with an average 2% increase across the board. The rise represents an increase of £1.3million. By far the lion's share - £1m of that rise is due to an increase in the teaching grants - due to increases in funded student numbers - particularly in medicine, dentistry and on part time courses. But it is good to see a continuing healthy rise now well over the £10m mark in the research allocation which is based on excellence in research performance." He noted however that while welcoming the above average increase for the University of Dundee, taking into account inflation in the sector, the allocations still represent another overall reduction in finance in real terms and the University will in consequence have to continue to find savings.

The table (below) shows a comparison of resource allocation for higher education institutions across Scotland.
