Scotland's first Advocate General and one of the most distinguished alumni of the University's department of law, Dr Lynda Clark QC is to deliver this year's Discovery Lecture at the annual meeting of the Graduates' Council at the West Park Centre on Saturday 29 April.
Clark for Discovery Dr Clark, whose role has put her at the centre of recent turmoil in Scotland's law scene following the adoption of the European Convention on Human Rights, will reveal some of the questions, challenges and changes which have resulted from the new legislation in her talk, "Incorporation of the ECHR into Uncharted Waters".
The ECHR came into operation in Scotland through the Scotland Act but is not due to come into force for the rest of Britain until October 2000, a situation which, says Dr Clark, means "the eyes of the rest of Britain are on Scotland to see how the European Convention is being used."
Dr Clark, who graduated in 1970, recently referred to the dramatic influence of her university years in GC magazine, saying: "The faculty made a very impressive mark on my life and it remains one of the best faculties of law in the country."
Her lecture at noon is open to the public and follows the annual meeting of the Graduates' Council. Alumni are then invited to a ticketed civic lunch hosted by the Lord Provost at the City Chambers.
