Town and Regional Planning

Town and Regional Planning has a thriving research environment with a supportive infrastructure. Research activity is focused around the following:

• The Geddes Institute focuses on planning for economic competitiveness, social justice and environmental sustainability.
The Joint Centre for Scottish Housing Research focuses on affordable housing, homelessness and social exclusion, housing and social policy and social housing provisions.
• The Centre for Conservation and Urban Studies focuses upon urban conservation in Europe and building preservation.
• The Geddes Institute has been engaged on major research projects for the ESRC into fiscal incentives for urban regeneration, the Scottish Executive on planning for telecommunications development, and monitoring and evaluating Social Inclusion Partnerships for the Dundee Partnership and Communities Scotland. It also undertakes pedagogical research in planning and environmental management.

The Joint Centre for Scottish Housing Research acts as the Research Co-ordinators for the European Observatory on Homelessness. The Centre also monitors activity in relation to affordable housing provision in England and in Scotland for central government and the Scottish Executive.

The Centre for Urban Conservation and Urban Studies is engaged in action research on building preservation with the Tayside Building Preservation Trust.

Postgraduate study in the School is linked directly to the ongoing research work. Applications are particularly encouraged in academic areas related to these research activities and priorities.
