Geography staff and PhD students work at the cutting edge in a number of research fields, including environmental change, policing, flooding, cold-climate geomorphology, health, volunteering and children and youth geography. We have a supportive and active research postgraduate community in bespoke office space within the Geography department.
Geography staff lead the University's Centre for Environmental Change and Human Resilience (a partnership between the University of Dundee and the James Hutton Institute) and the Scottish Institute for Policing Research, a collaboration between 13 Scottish universities.

Research staff and postgraduate students operate within two research groups, the Space and Society Research Group (SSRG) and the Environmental Systems Research Group (ESRG). Both hold regular informal discussion meetings and research seminars.
Geography at Dundee achieved an excellent result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Virtually all staff contribute research judged to be of international excellence with much work considered to be world class. With 60% of research activity rated as internationally outstanding or excellent (RAE 3* and 4*), Geography was ranked first equal in Scotland with St Andrews in the 2008 RAE, and in the top 15 in the United Kingdom. The result reflects our research strengths across the discipline.

You should have an honours degree at 2.1 or above, or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline.
English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in the written component and no less than 5.5 in any other component, if your first language is not English. Our postgraduate research training is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council 1 + 3 funding scheme. Prospective students in human geography can apply for a funded studentship from the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre.
