“By creating we think, by living we learn” Patrick Geddes
William Sangster Phillips died on 19th October 2001 just shortly before his 100th birthday. He was born in Dundee on 15th December 1901 and attended Dundee High School. His Father, Charles Gustave Louis Phillips, was an artist of some distinction. His paintings which Mr Phillips had retained at this death, were bequeathed to the Dundee Heritage Trust and are regularly displayed at Discovery Point or Verdant Works. They are mainly, but not all, scenes in Dundee and its surrounds. His Father's best known picture is Siege of Dundee by General Monk which belongs to the Dundee City Council and is displayed on the first floor at the right hand entrance to the Council Chambers. Mr Phillips was predeceased by his wife and left no family. He was a member of the Scottish Liberal Party and a past President of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association.
The Trustees of the late William S. Phillips Fund have awarded funding to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee) for the purposes of assisting students within the areas of Art and Design at Masters level.
These scholarships are available to students who are applying to undertake a one year Masters degree in Art or Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee. These awards are significant and prospective candidates will be expected to be eligible for study at an advanced level and capable of producing a substantive body of work or meaningful research in the art and design fields. Within the Duncan of Jordanstone, Art and Design are interpreted in their widest sense, including both traditional and innovative approaches to the disciplines. Artists and designers are continually extending the boundaries of their practice to incorporate new ideas, media and methods.
The fees for successful candidates will be waived for one year. In addition they will receive a tax free stipend paid from the Trust by Duncan of Jordanstone of £5,000 for one year. This will be paid in 2 instalments over the session when evidence of satisfactory study can be determined.
Applications will be judged on merit. Selected candidates may be interviewed.
Applications are invited from students with a minimum 2.1 honours degree.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Dundee connection.
