Overview

Spanish is spoken by over 400 million people worldwide and across a wide range of cultures. The University of Dundee Diploma in Spanish for Teachers by Distance Learning has been designed to respond to the growing need for Spanish teachers in the UK and worldwide in Primary, Secondary, Further or Adult Education. The Diploma offers many advantages in that it allows you to study when and where you like, for as long as you like. It is designed to promote a lively, on-line learning community studying the Spanish language and hispanic culture. A high degree of support is provided by native speaker tutors.

The course is delivered via the internet and takes the form of private study and interactive tasks in discussion with tutors and fellow students. There are also regular Immersion Days at Dundee throughout the course.

Aims of the Programme

The primary aim is to provide a GTC-recognised additional teaching qualification in Spanish for serving secondary teachers of Modern Languages. However other advanced learners of Spanish (including teachers in the primary, FE or AE sectors) who are interested in gaining an advanced qualification in their chosen language, will also find the programme of relevance to their needs and interests.

Programme Content

The programme consists of six main elements.

Immersion days focus on the development of spoken language, grammar workshops and professional studies.

Methods of Assessment

Oral and written continuous assessment (40%), final two-hour written examination (20%), final oral examination (20%), the project (20%).

Entry Requirements

Normally, a degree and a SQA Higher grade or equivalent in Spanish, plus a current secondary teaching qualification in another foreign language (where relevant).

English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English. Please check our Language Requirements page for details of equivalent grades from other test providers, and information about the University of Dundee English Language courses.
