Context

This is one of over ten degree pathways offered in the Masters Programme in Humanities with Specialisation. Students on the Programme take some common modules, and are able to draw upon the research culture of the School of Humanities. All the core teaching is conducted 5.30-7.30pm to allow attendance by part-time and full-time students alike. Other classes are scheduled for the mutual convenience of staff and students.

Aims of the Programme

To provide an understanding of the diverse forces at work in Scottish history since the early modern period, with a special focus on social, cultural and political development, and Scottish connections with the wider world.

Programme Content

All our History MLitt degrees have a common structure of 60 (4 x 15) credits of:

Scottish History students also choose two from a range of Scottish modules, which differ from year to year, but would typically include: Labour in Scotland, 1900-2000, Government in Early Modern Scotland, Scottish Architectural History, Towns, Society and Culture c.1650-1820.

Finally, students undertake a 60 credit dissertation.

Methods of Assessment

Assessment includes essays, skills tests, a presentation and a dissertation.

All students must attempt the dissertation. Students whose dissertation fails to satisfy the examiners will be awarded the PG Diploma, provided that the taught elements of the course have been successfully completed.

Entry Requirements

Students will normally be expected to have a degree in History or related discipline; normally first class or upper second as minimum.
