Overview

In the 2009 Good University Guide Dundee Law School was placed 9th in the United Kingdom law school rankings. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise Dundee Law School was one of only two law schools in the United Kingdom to achieve a 100% international standard classification, with half of our submissions being graded internationally excellent or world leading. Our commitment on is to provide high quality instruction, with a focus on matters of practical relevance, to prepare students for a successful legal career, whether at home or abroad.

Programme Content

In the light of the close inter-relationship of international criminal justice and human rights, the LLM International Criminal Justice & Human Rights programme allows students the flexibility to receive advanced instruction in both areas of law or to specialise in only one.  The areas of law are of particular contemporary relevance, which will benefit and interest students coming from a wide range of legal traditions. The programme will also develop a wide range of transferable skills, including in research, written and oral presentation and time management. 

UN Human Rights Law, introduces students to the major UN human rights treaties and the other UN mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights; and International & Comparative Human Rights considers the rule of law and associated concepts as a prelude to looking on a comparative basis at both international and national mechanisms for the protection of human rights and civil liberties.

Aspects of International Criminal Justice examines current topics in the law and criminal justice practices in common law and civilian legal systems.  It takes a comparative approach to a variety of contemporary substantive and procedural issues such as models of criminal justice, the admissibility of illegally obtained evidence, the rule of the prosecutor and victims' rights.  Individual Criminal Liability in International Law focuses on the principles of individual liability and procedures in regard to the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

In addition to these core modules, the programme also offers modules in Transnational Crime & Counter Terrorism, Regional Human Rights Systems: Africa, the Americas, Europe, Corporate Crime and Global Human Rights: Traditions & Inspirations. 

Methods of Assessment

Substantive modules: continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. Compulsory dissertation: 12-15,000 words.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have, or expect to receive in the anticipated year of entry, a good honours degree in law, of at least upper second class or equivalent. Exceptionally, non-law graduates with relevant legal experience may be considered.

English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.5, with minimum of 6.0 in the writing component (or equivalent), if your first language is not English. In order to make the application process as efficient as possible, students applying to The School of Law are asked to ensure all relevant supporting documents are included with the application. These include:
