German is the most widely spoken language in Europe after English and Russian. It is the mother tongue of a quarter of all Europeans and an official language in no less than seven European countries. Situated at the heart of Europe, Germany is the continent's largest economy, the UK's main trading partner, and a major political force behind the EU. Its importance is growing with expansion eastwards. Over the centuries, Germany has made outstanding contributions to world culture and scientific progress.
The primary aim is to provide a GTC-recognised additional teaching qualification in German for serving secondary teachers of Modern Languages. However other advanced learners of German (including teachers in the primary, FE or AE sectors) who are interested in gaining an advanced qualification in their chosen language, will also find the programme of relevance to their needs and interests.
The programme consists of six main elements:
Immersion days focus on the development of spoken language, grammar workshops and professional studies.
Oral and written continuous assessment (25%), final two-hour written examination (25%), final oral examination (25%), the project (25%)
Serving teachers may be able to obtain funding from their local authority or from their school.
Normally, a degree and a SQA Higher grade or equivalent in German plus a current secondary teaching qualification in another foreign language (where relevant).
English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English. Please check our Language Requirements page for details of equivalent grades from other test providers, and information about the University of Dundee English Language courses.
