Overview

The Forensic Toxicology programme teaches the knowledge base, skills and attitudes skills required to perform the duties of a Forensic Toxicologist.

The Centre for Forensic & Legal Medicine is in a unique position of being one of only a few universities that are involved in the practice of forensic toxicology for the legal and justice system.

Aims of the Programme

To produce students that have a thorough practical and theoretical understanding of both the legal and scientific requirements of a forensic toxicologist. Students will also gain an introduction to the wider subject of forensic science

Programme Content

Entrants will study three modules, Forensic Medicine, Forensic Science and Forensic Toxicology, in each of the first two semesters and if they are taking the masters they will complete their studies with a self-directed research project.

Methods of Teaching & Assessment

The programme is based on providing the practical working and knowledge requirements for forensic toxicologists and is taught through lectures, seminars, demonstrations and observations. Students will have the opportunity to visit a working mortuary as well as undergoing work shadowing in a working forensic toxicology laboratory

Assessment is via oral presentations, written assignments and computer aided assessment exercises

Entry Requirements

A degree in either chemistry, pharmacology, or other degree with a significant pharmacological or chemistry basis: minimum equivalent to upper second class honours

Experience of working in a forensic environment.
