Applied Computing

MSc

This course aims to take postgraduates with an interest and a little experience in computing and  imbue them with a firm knowledge, skills and understanding of computing and software development so that they may operate effectively in the application of computing to industry, commerce and research.

Status: If you need a visa to study in the UK, this course is closed to applicants for Sept 2012 entry. Apply by 15th July for Sept 2013.

Why study Applied Computing at Dundee?

If you've graduated from a non-computing subject and are looking to enhance your computer skills this could be the right course for you. This MSc in Applied Computing course allows students to move forward from their previous studies and expand their knowledge into the world of computing.

With a strong focus on software development, this course is far more than just an introduction to the basics of computing. It will drive you deeper into the understanding of engineering computer programs and databases. 

The course is based on practical, real-world assignments to provide great experience for your future career. As it is modelled on good practice within the industry, the MSc in Applied Computing ensures that students are kept up-to-date and instilled with a high level of employability.

Our facilities

You will have 24-hour access to our award winning and purpose-built Queen Mother Building. It has an unusual mixture of lab space and breakout areas, with a range of conventional and special equipment for you to use. It's also easy to work on your own laptop as there is wireless access throughout the building.

The School of Computing maintains a friendly, intimate and supportive atmosphere, and we take pride in the fact that we know all of our students - you're far more than just a matriculation number to us. We have a thriving postgraduate department with regular seminars and guest speakers.

Who should study this course?

The MSc in Applied Computing is for students that have graduated from subjects other than computing, but have a keen interest in developing their computing knowledge and skills.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught by staff in the School of Computing .

The start date is September each year. The MSc course lasts for 12 months and the PGDip lasts for 9 months.

What you will study

Over two semesters (between September and April) students will undertake 6 taught modules covering:

  • Internet and Computer Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Software Development and Advanced Programming using C++
  • Graphical User Interfaces
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Database Systems

Please note that some of the modules in the programme are shared with other masters programmes and some of the teaching and resources may be shared with our BSc programme. These joint classes offer a valuable opportunity to learn from, and discuss the material with, other groups of students with different backgrounds and perspectives.

How you will be assessed

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

Careers

Possible career paths include software development, website design, network support, database development and research, working as computer systems manager, data processing manager, software engineer, computer analyst & programmer, computer & IT consultant.

Graeme Coleman gained his MSc Applied Computing degree in 2003, he went on to undertake a PhD in the School of Computing, and is now working there as a postdoctoral research assistant.

Rajaram Lakshmanan from India graduated MSc Applied Computing in 2006. He went straight into a job as a Software Developer for HRH Geological Services, Aberdeen."I am part of the development team working on development, maintenance, documentation and support of in-house software. I also provide technical back up to the log bureau department to assist with customer support."

Entry Requirements

You should have, or expect to have, a degree in a subject other than computing, with a grade equivalent to at least a Class 2.2 Honours degree from a UK university, or equivalent qualifications.

English Language Requirement

IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English. Please check our Language Requirements page for details of equivalent grades from other test providers, and information about the University of Dundee English Language courses.

Living Costs

  • Dundee is ranked as one of the most affordable places for students to live in the UK, and the cost of living is around 15% cheaper than the UK average.
  • Increasing numbers of students are successfully undertaking part-time work to supplement their income. You can get advice from our Careers Service, both about job opportunities and how to find a suitable study/work/life balance. EU and international students are also allowed to work up to 20 hours per week.
  • As a student in Scotland, you have free access to the National Health Service. Visits to doctors and hospitals, as well as prescriptions, sight tests and dental checkups, are available free of charge.
