Why study Advanced Practice at Dundee?

The MSc Advanced Practice is an exciting and challenging programme that will allow you to advance in your chosen specialism. The wide range of modules offered reflect your areas of practice and areas of professional interest

Online delivery

Our Advanced Practice pathways are taught via online delivery. This flexible format means that you will be able to study whilst remaining employed in your chosen profession.

You will be supported by highly experienced academic educators with significant experience across a range of professional backgrounds.

"I had not studied for a while and so I found juggling a full time post, kids, family and home a challenge, but distance learning was ideal and I found completing the modules fairly straightforward and I enjoyed the mode of delivery and time frames"
Pamela Davidson, Senior Nurse Manager Infection Control

What's so good about studying Advanced Practice at Dundee?

"Although my Masters study has helped my career and opened up new avenues to me, the most important thing it has given me is belief. It has been extremely hard work and required dedication and commitment to see it through to the end, but looking back I am proud of what I have achieved"

Who should study this course?

The programme is particularly relevant for those pursuing leadership or management positions in healthcare, as well as those in Advanced Practice roles who wish to extend their qualifications.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught online by staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery. There is also the opportunity for some face-to-face teaching.

Intakes for this course are in either September or January each year.

How you will be taught

Most of our Advanced Practice pathways are taught via online delivery. Depending on the pathway you choose, there may also be some face-to-face teaching (local students only) and work-based learning to bridge the theory-practice gap.

What you will study

Students are required to undertake four modules, plus a dissertation. To satisfy the requirements for a named award, students must include certain modules focusing on the chosen speciality.

The dissertation must be on a topic relevant to the named award and may be a piece of research, a practice development project, or a systematic review. The choice of dissertation is negotiated between the student, postgraduate academic facilitator responsible for the named award and the dissertation co-ordinator.

Please use the links on the right to find out more about each pathway offered.

How you will be assessed

Our modules are assessed using a range of methods including essays, portfolios, patchwork texts, exams and continuous assessment of practice.

Methods of assessment depend on the programme of study you are undertaking. This means that if you are a distance learning student your modules would not include exams or continuous assessment of practice.

Careers

It is becoming increasingly important for nurses, midwives and other health professionals to be educated to master's level in order to demonstrate the skills to practise as specialists or to progress to management and leadership positions.

The MSc Advanced Practice enables you to study towards your goal, whatever it might be, while working within your chosen area of practice. Studying this programme can also help you to move into different areas of practice in order to achieve your career aspirations.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally required to have a relevant first degree. Previous experience may also be considered upon application, for more information, visit the School of Nursing & Midwifery APEL webpage.
