Future of Devolution: Scotland and Spain
This symposium, hosted by the Centre for the Study of European Political Parties, will be held at the University of Dundee in River Rooms 3+2 on 9th Floor of the Tower Building on Monday 19 September 2011.
In 2011, the Scottish Parliament reached a critical juncture. Scotland's political parties disagree over the extent to which further authority should be devolved from Westminster but they are in agreement that it should acquire more competence over financial matters. There is more fundamental disagreement about how much more power should be assigned to Holyrood up to and including independence. The issue of autonomy is by no means restricted to Scotland, however. It is also highly salient in Spain where successive episodes of devolution have created powerful autonomous communities and what some now consider one of the most decentralised states in Europe.
The symposium includes speakers from the Scottish Parliament who will consider what the future holds for Scotland and how the political parties can influence the future trajectory of Scottish politics. There will also be contributions about the Spanish experience from constitutional law professors from the University of Jaen in Spain.
