Academic: BA (Hons) Cantab Economics Tripos 1967 First Class Honours MSc Reading Agricultural Economics
Professional: Member of the Institution of Economic Development Member of the Institute for Learning and Teaching
Graduating in economics at Cambridge, I won a Ministry of Overseas Development postgraduate studentship to take an MSc in Agricultural Economics at Reading before taking up a post in resource management and development in the Government of Malawi. Appointed the initial Stanley Smith Senior Fellow in Political Economy at the University of St. Andrews, I subsequently took a tenured lecturing post there before being appointed senior lecturer and initial programme director of the University of Dundee's accredited environmental management degree, which I set up.
My professional offices include chairman of the National Council of the Institution of Economic Development (2002-04) and of The Claverhouse Group (2002- ), a major Dundee-based not-for-profit training and environmental services provider. I have also served two terms as an elected member of a Scottish regional authority and while at St. Andrews I established a spin-off consultancy in economic impact assessment.
