BSc (hons) Town and Country Planning
I am a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Since 1991 I have been the Chief Executive of Tayside Building Preservation Trust, from 1991, I have been a director of the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust. From 1991 I have been a Member of Advisory Committee to Historic Scotland’s Conservation Bureau.
I am a member of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, The National Trust for Scotland and The Scotish Vernacular Buildings Working Group.
I first worked for Midlothian County Council as a planning assistant from 1969-1971. Following graduation in 1974 I worked as a planner with Perth and Kinross Council until 1980 when I joined Dundee City Council as a senior planner. I came to the Planning School to lecture full time in September 1971.
During these almost twenty years spent in local authorities, I always worked in the field of urban conservation. Workloads ranged through conservation area designation, listed building survey, processing and advising on listed building applications; serving Building Preservation and Repairs Notices, administration of grant programmes, and numerous special projects ranging from community involvement in building restoration to architectural salvage.
