Career

Dr Dumiso Moyo is the programme leader for the post-graduate MSc in Local and Regional Economic Development and the Centre Manager for the post-graduate Joint Distance learning MA in Town and Country Planning. He previously worked as a professional planner in local authorities and in private consultancy before joining the property development industry. In addition Dumiso has experience working with non governmental organisations involved in providing technical support to communities involved with affordable housing supply. His experience is in various facets of town planning including "traditional" local authority planning, housing, retail, infrastructure and property development and local and regional economic development in the UK, Ireland and the sub-Saharan Africa region. Dumiso is the former honorary secretary and president of the Zimbabwe institute of urban and regional planners and former vice president of the Commonwealth Association of Planners.

Research

His PhD research focused on seeking an explanation of the housing dilemma in sub-Sahara Africa. Dumiso's research interests include:

• Relationship between Planning Theory and Practice
• Complexity of the governance of housing provision in both developed and developing countries
• Challenges in the provision of urban infrastructure
• The role of cities in local and regional economic development
• Comparisons in international planning practices
• Drawing transferable lessons from distance learning programmes for use in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research
