Prospective International Students

We are delighted to welcome the growing number of international students who come to study on our degree programmes, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programmes address issues of common concern, such as Sustainable Development, Urban Growth, Climate Change and Heritage Management, and lead to highly regarded professional qualifications that are accredited by a range of professional bodes such as the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). In recent years our student community has been drawn from countries across the globe, including India, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, USA, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Poland.

Why study at Dundee?

Firstly, Dundee University offers you the chance to study how the founding fathers of the town planning profession sought to address planning issues similar to those we face today. One such esteemed town planner, Sir Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), the father of town planning, is strongly associated with the work carried out in our School. The planning ideas advocated by Geddes have been influential beyond Britain. For instance, Geddes prepared detailed reports for over fifty Indian towns and considered how best to tackle issues of congestion and transport. As a result of the unique contribution made by Geddes in understanding our built environment, we contribute to an inter-disciplinary research centre in the University, the Geddes Institute for Urban Research, that brings together disciplines such as Planning, Architecture and Geography

Secondly, we have experienced and committed staff with knowledge and experience of addressing issues relevant to urban planning in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia.

Thirdly, our post-graduate students have an opportunity to specialise within priority areas in the planning profession including Environment Assessment, Urban Conservation, Urban Design and Marine Spatial Planning. These specialisations, which are of growing significance in emerging economies, will equip students for careers both in the public and private sectors. To support the development of these skills, students have access to modern computer facilities, a wide collection of electronic books and electronic journals in planning and related subjects. We facilitate learning from professionals in the field and host regular events such as the Dundee Conservation Lectures.

And finally, Dundee, a friendly city by the River Tay, offers a range of possibilities to explore the beauty of both the natural and the built environment in Scotland. A study in Dundee is not complete without taking time to appreciate the 'solitude of the rugged coasts and empty glens' and 'pristine Highland wilderness' of Scotland (Warren 2002). Within an hour's drive from the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, studying in Dundee gives an opportunity to understand the challenges of planning cities at different scales. Dundee is also within two hours drive of the commercial capital of Scotland, Glasgow and is well linked to London by bus, train and air services.

In addition to support given within Town and Regional Planning, the University provides a range of services specifically designed for International students.
