Dundee City Council Civic Award 2006/2007

On Wednesday 25 January, Frances McKernie, has been named the winner of the Dundee Civic Award 2007

The Dundee Civic Award is an award given by Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Department for innovative planning ideas. Students undertake a 'live' project based on planning issues Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Department are currently considering.

This year the third-year students were asked to submit their proposals for the future of the Lochee area of Dundee. The students were challenged to develop supplementary planning guidance for issues facing the area, including the regeneration of the Stack Leisure Park and traffic and parking in Lochee High Street.

Two other students received commendations - Heidi Clarke (from Newtownards, Northern Ireland) and Michael Lorimer (Ballymena, Northern Ireland).

The award - a cash prize of £200 - was presented by Mr Mike Galloway, Director of Planning and Transportation, Dundee City Council, who is himself a past winner.

"The council is pleased to continue its support of this award, which is extremely important not just to the University and the students, but also in terms of encouraging future planners coming into the profession," said Mr Galloway.

"The students this year were asked to look at the Lochee area, which is one the city council are looking at for future regeneration, so it was very interesting for us to see the ideas the students had come up with themselves and also to hear their comments on some of our own thoughts about the area and how it may develop in future."
