MSc International Urban Conservation

Teaching

Teaching Methods

The taught elements of the Diploma programme use traditional techniques of lecture and seminar, supported by use of the University's VLE system. However, emphasis is placed on the application of knowledge through site visits and coursework, which engage students with real-life situations and promote professional skills. Through the dedicated studio space an atelier spirit is fostered, whereby students can undertake individual study in a supportive atmosphere conducive to cross-fertilisation of ideas and shared insights.

Coursework is so designed as to allow the development of individual interests within the broad subject of urban conservation, whilst enhancing academic skills and developing professional skills. The dissertation allows such interests to be intensively explored. Specific content of the programme can thus be tailored to meet individual needs both academically and in relation to the preferred career destination.

The international study visit challenges students to apply the knowledge accumulated through the taught programme in an unfamiliar setting, providing insights into key issues.

Examinations

Porto

The MSc will be assessed by a Research Report (approximately 20,000 words) and four three-hour examinations. Analysing Architecture will be continuously assessed components and, in the other four lecture courses, coursework will constitute 50% of the total. Coursework and examinations will be assessed by internal and external examiners.

In order to proceed to the MSc (Semester 3), Diploma students must have achieved coursework marks and examination results equivalent to a good Honours Degree standard.
