Module Content

This module will explore the ways in which the philosophy of religion has developed since the Middle Ages by examining key texts in both theology and philosophy.

It will focus in particular on the role of rational debate and the ways in which conceptions of religion and God are determined by the existing philosophical assumptions about reality and the nature of the human subject. Close attention will be paid to the relation between reason and faith, as well as the role of atheism in understanding religion. The module will go on to explore the nature of religious language and how it may call for a different way of understanding its referential function in distinction to ordinary uses of language. Students will read philosophical and theological texts in tandem with primary religious texts, such as books or passages from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.

Teaching

3 hours per week over 11 teaching weeks in the first semester. In each week there will be a two-hour lecture and a one-hour tutorial.
