Research Degrees (MPhil & PhD)
The Philosophy Programme offers both taught postgraduate courses and supervision for postgraduate degrees by research. We welcome applicants who already have an Honours degree in Philosophy, as well as those with backgrounds in related disciplines who wish to take up philosophy at an advanced level. We are also keen to support interdisciplinary work, particularly in Philosophy and the Arts. Joint supervision can be arranged for such projects involving other Schools and Colleges, including Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD).
If you wish to work in one of the following areas, we would be particularly interested in hearing from you:
- European Philosophy: you would be joining a team of researchers - both staff and postgraduates - committed to exploring some of the most exciting developments in recent continental philosophy. Specialisms include: Phenomenology and Hermeneutics, Postmodernism, Feminist Philosophy, Recent French Philosophy, Philosophies of Affect and the Body, as well as Nietzsche, Badiou, Bergson, Foucault, Gadamer, Henry, Irigaray, Deleuze, Laruelle, and Lyotard.
- Recent Analytic Philosophy: you would be working with specialists whose own research regularly involves them in the international research community, and who have ongoing projects in Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Science (including cognitive science and artificial intelligence).
- History of Philosophy: you would become part of a research environment in which key texts from the History of Philosophy are seen as crucially informing and transforming contemporary debate. Current staff members are particularly interested in re-readings of work by: Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant and Hegel.
- Philosophy and the Arts: you would be joining a team whose teaching, research and conference activities promote interdisciplinary work exploring the relation between theory and practice, as well as between philosophy and the visual and literary arts, including film. Work in these areas is facilitated by our strong links with the English Programme and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.
For further details of staff specialisms, please see individual staff profiles. Details of some current and recent student profiles and projects are also available.
Proposals for Postgraduate Research
If you would like to apply to undertake postgraduate research with us, a crucial part of your application will be your research proposal. Proposals should be around 1,000 words and should include a bibliography.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss such proposals with prospective applicants prior to their making a formal application: please contact the Philosophy Postgraduate Officer, James Williams, if you would like to do this. Alternatively, if you already know who you would like to work with as your primary supervisor, you can contact them directly - see our staff profiles for their contact details.
