Biography
Dr Jan Bernd Vorstius is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering (BMED) at the University of Dundee, where he has played a pivotal role in the design, development, implementation, and leadership of the MSc Industrial Engineering programmes. As Programme Lead, he has successfully shaped and expanded the curriculum, aligning it with emerging industry needs to provide students with a forward-thinking education that bridges theoretical learning and practical application.
Previously, Dr Vorstius served for over five years as Programme Lead for the BEng Mechanical Engineering (and Renewables) programme. During his tenure, student numbers tripled and the programme received significant recognition, being ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian University League Tables.
Since joining the University of Dundee in 2008, Dr. Vorstius has held various academic administrative roles, including Advisor of Studies and Health and Safety Officer. His roles as TPG Cluster Lead at SSEN, Go-Abroad Academic Coordinator, and Examination Officer allowed him to foster meaningful international partnerships, drive academic excellence, and enrich the student experience. In 2022, Dr Vorstius was appointed as Director of External Experience and Employability (DEEE). In this role, he leads the integration of employability and enterprise initiatives in undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes across SSEN, enhancing students' readiness for professional success.
Research
Dr Vorstius’ research focuses on two main areas: Tissue Engineering and Industry-based Knowledge Transfer. In Tissue Engineering, he strives to advance artificial musculoskeletal tissue growth through innovative engineering approaches, supporting research into musculoskeletal diseases while reducing the reliance on animal testing. In Industry-based Knowledge Transfer, Dr Vorstius applies his expertise in advanced control engineering, the influence of thermal processes on materials, and digital engineering technologies to current industry challenges. This research fosters collaborations between the University of Dundee and a wide range of industrial sectors, facilitating the translation of academic innovations into practical, real-world applications.
