Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL)

The School of Nursing and Midwifery recognises that students applying for courses may have derived significant learning from previous educational and life/work experience. By introducing a process of Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL), the School offers potential students the opportunity of having such learning assessed for credit on their chosen academic pathway.  APL can be used to gain credit on the BSc programme for previous certificated learning (APCL - Accreditation for Certificated Learning).

To complete any of the degree programmes offered by the School (BSc Nursing, BSc Midwifery or BSc Health Studies) you need a total of 120 points at Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 9. For a degree awarded by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, you must complete at least 60 of these points with us but it is possible to transfer up to 60 credit points from previous certificated learning (APCL) from another institution.  However, this study must have been completed within the last five years.

Credit can be gained by providing evidence of study at degree level within the last five years.  Normally, a transcript of previous study or a certificate is sufficient for this but it must include confirmation of the level studied at and the number of credits gained.  This credit can provide exemption from optional modules within your chosen programme of study.

If you wish to apply for credit via APCL, please complete the following form and submit it together with your programme application form:

Please note: there is a cost of £50 for each 10 point credit being claimed through APCL (e.g. £150 for a 30 point module)
