Higher Degrees by Research

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is a large and dynamic department within the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing - a configuration which has created a productive environment for interdisciplinary research.

The University of Dundee has powered its way to a position as one of Scotlands leading Universities with an international reputation for excellence across a range of activities, and it is within this environment that research within the School of nursing and Midwifery is flourishing.

Dundee has been described as an aspirational university with its head in the clouds and its feet firmly on the ground. Founded in 1881 as University College, Dundee, was, for many yeard, a part of the University of St Andrews, becoming an independent university in its own right in 1967. Three mergers have doubled the University's size over the last ten years to today's complement of over 18,000 students and 3,000 staff making it one of the largest employers in the local area.

We only accept proposals that fit in with our Research Programme.

Whilst our main research focus is around this programme, we also have very strong themes that bridge these i.e. Users and Carers and Research Methods e.g. systematic reviews, qualitative methods including focus groups.

Postgraduate study within the School of Nursing and Midwifery takes place within a thriving research culture. The School is a large dynamic department within a College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, a configuration which has created a productive environment for interdisciplinary research, a distinctive feature of our research activity.

PhD Studentship

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to developing research that is of the highest quality and contributes to the health and well-being of the population.  To help us achieve this, applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The studentship includes a stipend (£13,000 per annum), and tuition fees for a maximum of 3 years.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery’s research is multidisciplinary and focused on Personalising Care.  Successful applicants will be attached to senior researchers working within this programme of research with a particular focus on the older person with cancer.  Further information about research being carried out at the School can be accessed via Research.  The studentship will focus on the supportive care needs of the older person with cancer.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified nursing and psychology professionals wishing to study for an MPhil/PhD degree.  Applicants should hold a 1st class or Upper Second Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) or a postgraduate Masters Degree in Nursing, or Psychology.
