Training

Neurosurgical training in the UK, is divided into two stages. The first stage is called Foundation Programme and covers the first two years after graduation. The second stage is called Specialist Neurosurgical Training. Neurosurgical training

The ST in neurosurgery at Dundee, is a one year rotation with Glasgow at ST3/4 level. The ST comes to Dundee in the third or fourth year of his or her training. There is also an ST1 and an ST3 stand alone posts. These are recruited via open competition. The training is tailored to the needs of the trainee with particular attention to experience in competencies relevant to the year of training. The trainee will also have an opportunity to learn leadership and management skills as he or she will be in a unique position of responsibility. The ST spends a minimum of 4 sessions per week in the operating room and two sessions per week in the outpatient. The ST is required to participate in Research, teaching and audit activities.

There are three trainees at this level:

Theses posts rotate for four months in neurosurgery and are required to participate in teaching, audit and research.

Accreditation in Neurosurgery

Training in neurosurgery is now structured in programmmes across the UK & Ireland. Candidates must pass the Intercollegiate Board assessment in neurosurgery. Please check the GMC, PMETB, the royal colleges and Intercollegiate Board websites for up to date requirements.
