History

The Neurosurgical Department at Dundee was opened by Professor Norman Dott in September 1966. It provides general neurosurgical services to Tayside and the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland and specialist services in stereotactic, DBS, ITB, epilepsy, skullbase, functional and pain surgery to a much wider area, treating patients from across Scotland. We provide the National Centre for Neurosurgery for Mental Disorders and offer NMD and PDT to patients from across the UK and outside the UK.

The Founders of the department were the late Mr Joe Block and the late Mr Ivan Jacobson. Other surgeons who worked in the department and contributed to the development of the department were; TRK Varma (1986 - 1998), D Gentleman (1991 - 1996) and Peter Mathews (1996-1998). Several other neurosurgeons have worked in the department either as locum consultants or during their training; Messers D Rawluck, D Shaw, P May, P Barlow and Prof Tony Bells.

The department was located in Dundee Royal Infirmary (DRI) in a purpose built block for 32 years (September 1966 to November 1998). It was relocated within Ninewells Hospital and Medical school campus on November 13, 1998 in a purpose built block.
