The Bach Consort will be performing Graun's Der Tod Jesu in St Paul's Meadowside on 30th March at 7pm. THE passion work until the rediscovery of the Passions of Bach the text of this beautiful work was also set to music by Telemann. Rather than a re-telling of the Passion story with parts for Evangelist and Christ, it is more reflective on the story. We're delighted to welcome Emily Goad (soprano) and Jonathan Matheson Dear (tenor) who will be singing some of the solos. Tickets are only £5 and are available on the door or from Ticketsource.

The University Chorus and Orchestra will be performing Carmina Burana in the Caird Hall on Sunday 24th March at 7.30pm. Also in the programme will be Franck's Psyche, Faure's Messe Bass and Cantique de Jean Racine. Tickets are £12, £8 concession and available from either performers of from the City Box Office.

The University Concert Band, directed by Susan Sneddon, will be giving a concert in St Paul's Cathedral at 7.30pm. Music performed by the band will include works by John Williams and Gustav Holst. The Chamber Choir will be giving their annual concert in the Chaplaincy Centre on Sunday 10th March at 5.30pm. The programme will include a Motet and Mass by Victoria, Sechs Lieder by Mendelssohn and The Painter's Eye by Tom Cunningham and Alexander McCall Smith. An exciting term is in prospect with OPSOC marking their 50th anniversary with a production of Evita and the University Choir and Orchestra making its debut in the Caird Hall with a performance of Carmina Burana.

The University Music Society will be giving a Christmas Concert in Dundee Parish Church (St Mary's) on Saturday 1st December at 4pm. The programme will consist of music from the lighter side of Christmas featuring Christmas at the Movies, A Musicological journey through the 12 days of Christmas, The 12 days after Christmas as well as numbers from the Big Band and Chamber Choir. Tickets are £7, £6 (concession) and £3 (students) and available from members of the society or on the door.

The University Choirs and Orchestra will be putting on their first concert of the year on Wed October 24th at 7pm. The concert will tale place in St Paul's Cathedral, Castlehill and consist of music by lesser known composers of famous musical families: Bach, Haydn and Mozart. 2 of the major works are the Grand Piano Concerto in Eb by FXW Mozart (son of WA) and a Requiem by Michael Haydn (brother of FJ). Also included are pieces by J Christian Bach (son of JS), J Christoph Bach (1st cousin 1 removed of JS) and J Ludwig Bach (2nd cousin of JS ). Tickets are £7, £6 (concession) and £3 (students).

Starting at 7.30pm on Friday 5th October, students from the University will rehearse Simon Gallaher's arrangement of G & S's Mikado for a performance on Saturday 6th October. Although the principals have had a chance to look at their parts, all the direction, chorus work and band call will be done in 24 hours. There will a one-off lunchtime concert in the Chaplaincy Centre at 1.20pm on Thursday 26th July. Gillian Craig (clarinet), Angela Stevenson (cello) and William Stevenson (piano) will be performing music by Glinka, Leighton and Juon. Entry free.

The programme will include Rossini's Overture to La Gazza Ladra, Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites and Holst's setting of the old English ballad King Estmere. The University music groups all resume rehearsals the week beginning January 16th. A very busy term is in prospect with OPSOC putting on Spring Awakening, the music society preparing a concert of music by Holst, Rossini and Grieg and at the beginning of April, the Bach Consort will be performing Bach's St John Passion.

We are putting on a performance of Tomfoolery on Friday October 14th in the Bonar Hall at 7.30pm. A comedy revue based on the songs of Tom Leher, numbers include "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park", "I got it from Agnes" and "The Vatican Rag". Monies raised will go towards Million for a Morgue. The University Choir and Orchestra will be giving their final concert of the session on March 23rd at 7pm in St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee. The programme consists of Guilmant's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra No. 1 and Haydn's Nelson Mass. The soloists for the Haydn will be drawn from our own students but we're delighted to welcome back a former organ scholar, Neil Smeaton as the soloist for the Guilmant. Tickets available on the door.

The Chamber Choir CD has finally been released. Recorded in March 2010 it features Victoria's Missa O quam Gloriosum as well as part songs/madrigals by composers such as Morley, Wilbye, Sullivan Stanford.

Music Society will be putting on a concert to thank their associate members on Saturday 5th March. The event begins at 12pm and there will be a short concert at 1pm. This will take place in the new Music Rooms in Cross Row.

Music Society and OPSOC have now moved from their old rehearsal space in Airlie Place to new premises in the Microcomputing Centre. Despite some soundproofing issues, everybody is very happy with the increased amount of space for both rehearsing and storage.
