The law of tort deals with situations where someone's actions have caused harm or loss to another person, and as a result, the harmed person can seek compensation.
Tort is an essential part of what is sometimes referred to as the law of obligations. In daily life, tort is commonly encountered with personal injury matters but is a broader concept.
This module covers elements of negligence such as causation, remoteness, foreseeability, and other torts such as defamation.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- learn about negligence, defamation, and damages
- learn about the distinction between different types of harm, such as psychiatric harm
- learn about a range of other areas of the law, e.g. nuisance and privacy
- learn about the various types of damages and the assessment of such damages

Teaching methods / timetable
The module will be delivered through lectures, practicals, independent study, and tutorials.
Lectures will be used to present information and structure learning, allowing some interaction. Tutorials will involve small group work and student-led discussion.
