Private law concerns legal relationships between individuals and can be divided into the law of persons, the law of property, and the law of obligations.
You will learn about delict, i.e. how and when the law imposes obligations on people to not cause harm to others.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- discover how the law deals with negligence
- learn of the fundamental principles underpinning the law of delict
- consider how liability is imposed on different people and organisations
- learn about the legal remedies available to a person if they have suffered harm because of what someone else has done
- focus on various specific delicts i.e. professional and medical negligence, nuisance, defamation, and the misuse of private information
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- think like a lawyer
- build on skills and techniques already acquired in other modules
- present reasoned legal arguments both orally and in written form

Lectures will be used to present information and structure your learning. A certain degree of interaction will be expected from you.
