| GENERAL MATTERS |
This test is used to test the prolactin response to metoclopramide as an indicator of the possible presence of a pituitary condition producing excess prolactin.
What do I need to do before the test?
You are requested not to eat anything from mid-night of the day of the test. If you are on any medication, withhold taking hormone replacement therapy, steroid tablets, thyroxine tablets until the test is complete.
OUTLINE OF THE PROCEDURE
You will be asked to lie flat for the duration of the test. Your named nurse will introduced herself and explain what to expect.
A small needle/canula will be inserted into a vein in the back of your hand or arm. This is called a venflon and allow your named nurse to obtain blood samples without causing too much discomfort.
We will take the blood sample to check the baseline value of prolactin. We will then give you 10mg of metoclopramide into the venflon. Blood samples will be taken via a cannula in your arm at 10,20,30,45,60,90 and 120 minute intervals after the injection of metoclopramide to measure the prolactin response
You will be monitored closely throughout the test.
On completion your venflon will be removed and you will be offered refreshments prior to going home.
You might feel uncomfortable after the metoclopramide is given. You may feel restless, drowsy and notice increased muscular movement. These side-effects are more likely to occur in those on other medicines which alter brain activity such as anti-epileptic medicine, phenothiazine and antidepressant medicines. Do let the nurse know if you are on any such medicine.
We will write to your doctor with the results.
