Message from the Chaiman of Congress

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to invite you to participate in the forthcoming EUROCHAP meeting which is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland between, 25th - 27th October 2005.

EUROCHAP is the European Chapter Meeting of the International Union of Angiology and we are delighted that, on this occasion, it is the UK's turn to provide the venue. A warm welcome awaits us in Glasgow in 2005. This is one of Britain's friendliest cities and we shall be well looked after. Glasgow also has a reputation for world beating achievements in Science, Engineering and the Arts, as well as in Medicine. It is fitting that the European Chapter of the International Union of Angiology should meet in this prestigious city in which antiseptic surgery and medical ultrasound were pioneered.

Vascular Medicine/Angiology has made immense progress in Europe within the last 10 years and this is reflected in the exciting advances to be discussed within the EUROCHAP Programme in Glasgow. The EUROCHAP meeting will offer a major opportunity to update clinical practice across the spectrum of Vascular Medicine/Angiology. In preparing for the Glasgow Congress, we have sought to link with other specialist Societies to bring you the most recent advances in these particular areas of interest. In each of these joint symposia there will be contributions from these learned Societies directly to the programme. We shall also have presentations from leading clinical and basic scientists so that we can define the principals upon which medical practice will be based in the future. There will also be opportunities for young clinicians, students and trainees to make their work known to a wider audience through the medium of research paper sessions and poster presentations.

I hope your visit to Glasgow in 2005 will be scientifically and educationally rewarding. (My colleagues on the Organising Committee have worked hard to ensure this!) However, we hope that the EUROCHAP meeting will provide more than this. The International Union of Angiology is an international organisation and these meetings offer opportunities to meet colleagues from around the world. Old friendships are renewed and new friendships forged. Glasgow will provide the perfect setting for social as well as scientific enjoyment. It is an opportunity not to be missed.

I look forward to seeing you in October.

Best wishes,

Message from the IUA President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 16th European Chapter Congress of the International Union of Angiology, organised by Professor Jill Belch on October 25th-27th 2005 at the Moat House Hotel in Glasgow, UK.

Professor Jill Belch, President of the Congress and Secretary of the European Chapter of the International Union of Angiology, invited a faculty of international experts in vascular medicine and biology, interventional radiology, cardiology, vascular and endovascular surgery, to participate in this important scientific event.
Delegates from different countries of Europe and worldwide will meet in Glasgow to present and to discuss the latest advances in vascular research and therapy of vascular diseases.

The International Union of Angiology has grown considerably in recent years concerning the number of the members, the scientific activities organised, and the quality of the Journal International Angiology, and we are stronger today than anytime before.

In the recent 21st IUA World Congress in Rome important changes were made in the Constitution with the creation of the Multinational Chapter, including multinational Scientific Associations and with the co-operation of National Societies as Associate Members, to enlarge the participation of more scientists in the Administrative Board of the Union and so to increase the growth of the Union.

Other Committees were also created, as the Committee on Guidelines, the Committee on Vascular Centres, and two new Councils, on Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and on Vascular Biology and Medicine, this latter chaired by Professor Jill Belch, to consent a new expansion of the Union.

Members of the Union include over 1,600 physicians, surgeons and scientists from different specialties, who investigate or treat vascular disease.

The IUA today is a multidisciplinary, international umbrella organisation of vascular specialists.

I am sure that the EUROCHAP 2005 Congress in Glasgow will be a very successful meeting, since a very qualified scientific agenda is combined with a most enjoyable social and cultural program.

Once again I would like to welcome you in Glasgow, UK, at the 16th European Chapter Congress of the International Union of Angiology, a society of vascular medicine, surgery and endovascular interventions!
