Jan was appointed in 1998 as the SCPMDE Senior Lecturer in Dental Primary Care with responsibility to promote and develop research in dental primary care and work with the Scottish Consortium for Development and Education in Dental Primary Care. During her appointment she has developed the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network, a collaboration across all branches of dentistry in Scotland to facilitate capability and capacity building of research in Dental Primary Care.
Jan represents dentistry at a number of regional and national committees including the CSO Primary Care Implementation Group and the SIGN guideline development for the long-term management of survivors of child-hood cancer. She also contributes to the work of national dental groups including the Consultants in Paediatric Dentistry and the Specialist Care Group for people with bleeding disorders. International work includes contributing to the Cochrane Collaboration as an editor of the Oral Health Group and providing training in systematic reviews and evidence based practice.
Within DHSRU, as Director of the Effective Dental Practice Programme, she manages a portfolio of research focusing on the implementation of research evidence in clinical practice.
