Clinical and Molecular Genetics

The department of human genetics is well recognised for work into Genetic Defects Underlying Monogenic Skin Disorders (Professor Irwin McLean, Professor Irene Leigh, Dr Frances Smith), Genetic Predispositions of Multifactorial Skin Diseases (Professor Irwin McLean, Dr John Foerster), and Epithelial Biology (Professor Birgit Lane, Dr Andrey Panteleyev).

In addition, a strong research focus on Skin Cancer has been established (Professor Irene Leigh, Dr Charlotte Proby, Dr Andy South).

Complementary with this research, genomic and cytogenetic technology is being used by Dr Norman Pratt and Dr Jonathan Berg to analyse Genetic Involvement in Solid Tumour Development.

Another research emphasis within the unit is Professor Susann Schweiger's work on Monogenic Disorders of the Ventral Midline and Microtubule-Associated Translation Control, which has broad implications for the development and potential therapy of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

Strong bonds with other groups within the Centre for Oncology & Molecular Medicine, with the Biomedical Research Centre, the Centre for Neuroscience, and the University's College of Life Sciences help to make human genetics research interactive and lively.
