Formed in 2008, the Division of Medical Sciences provides a high quality research and training environment for more than 400 clinicians and scientists based on the Ninewells Hospital & Medical School campus.

Our guiding principle is to develop and maintain excellence in research, through the appointment and nurturing of first-rate staff within an environment where research teams work together to tackle fundamental problems in human health. We take an interdisciplinary approach to Translational Medicine, where existing and developing strengths in molecular and cellular biology are making significant contributions to the understanding of the causes, course of development, detection and treatment of human disease. Research carried out within the Division was rated 5* at RAE2001, and at RAE2008 65% of our research activity was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (4* and 3*) – ranked 4th in the UK. Much of our work involves close collaborations with NHS colleagues based in Tayside, Fife and elsewhere in Scotland.

We also pride ourselves on delivering an excellent research-led teaching and learning experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Medicine, Dentistry and the Biomedical Sciences.
