Quality, Safety & Informatics Research Group

Lead, Professor Bruce Guthrie

The twin aims of the QSI research group are to deliver internationally recognised academic research in this field, and to ensure that the quality and safety of clinical care is directly improved by our work. The group focuses on undertaking and subsequently translating clinical research evidence into reliable, high quality, safe clinical and organisational practice. The group includes a broad range of research disciplines, with skills and experience in rigorously applying quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. Our funding includes research and programme grants from the Wellcome Trust, MRC, Chief Scientist Office, Scottish Funding Council, National Institutes of Health Research and NHS Quality Improvement Scotland.

Current and recent research projects

Group members also have central roles in the running and development of several College-wide core research support facilities, including the Health Informatics Centre (Deputy Director - Dr Colin McCowan, Executive members - Professor Frank Sullivan, Professor Bruce Guthrie, Dr Shaun Treweek), the Dundee Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (Director - Professor Peter Donnan), and the Dundee Clinical Trials Unit (Assistant Director – Dr Shaun Treweek).

Complementing our academic research, we also support and evaluate applied improvement work and the introduction of new technologies with our NHS partners, by working with NHS staff responsible for implementing quality and safety improvements within the health service, for example, in the Scottish Safety Improvement in Primary Care Collaborative
