Health Informatics Centre
HIC, as part of the TAyside medical Science Centre (TASC), provides expert data management support to researchers and others through the collection, management and delivery of linked data and otherenhanced data management services. HIC supports Health Services research, disease, safety, educational and genetic areas of research, along with technical collaborations, clinical audit and NHS management.
HIC's data collection strategy is well-developed, covering long-term collections of whole populations, such as Scottish Mrobidity Register (SMR) hospitalisation data and dispensed community prescription data, to short-term collections and disease-specific coverage, such as GoDARTS Diabetes Tayside cohort and Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study. HIC has a technical focus in its acquisition of data - developing new systems to collect and channel data from other partners. HIC's management processes are viewed as safe and effective, including secure hosting & backup and adding missing data (eg CHI) for research and other new data sources. Current work will see HIC's future delivery processes standardised around the HIC safe haven, in a collaborative development with Life Sciences.
HIC is committed to supporting research use of the data through the delivery of high quality metadata, links to expert users or relevant clinical staff and support to users in managing and analysing the data. This is facilitated through working closely with data users throughout the process to identify how best to provide support and develop our understanding of the utility of the existing data.
All of this involves collaboration at the regional, national and international level, based on a successful partnership between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside over the past 2 decades.
