Introduction
Although not a general teaching department serving undergraduates, Dundee Medical Physics teaches its own postgraduate students through research degrees (PhD., MSc. by thesis) and also teaches modules for other departments' courses.
For an example of a research thesis prepared within our department, see the Compression Bandage Pressue Measurement work by Tao Wu.
Group teaching currently falls into three main areas (linked above in the title bar for quick navigation)
Computer Aided Learning
We are developing Computer Aided Learning courses for Radiation Physics topics for instruction of medical students. The first fruits of this labour, CALRAD, has been in use since 1997.
CALRAD is a Computer Assisted Learning program which has been developed by a consortium of Universities in the United Kingdom with the aim of educating medical students, junior doctors and other medical staff about the principles of radiation protection of patients.
CALRAD should be of particular interest to Medical Physicists, Radiation Protection Staff, Radiologists, Radiographers and Dental staff.
Further details, including downloadable demonstrations, are available on the CALRAD page.
It is worth noting that CALRAD is due for replacement. Various updates to regulations in 2000 are not built in to the existing program, and the Radiology - Integrated Training Initiative has a programme that should completely replace CALRAD sometime in the not too distant future. The Radiation Physics section of Dundee Medical Physics is one of the partners working on the content currently covered by CALRAD.
Professional Courses
The department teaches short professional courses in areas of expertise, most commonly Magnetic Resonance Quality Assurance. Details are posted on our web pages of any upcoming courses, though we've nothing in the pipeline right now.
Special Study Modules for Medical Students
The department teaches special study modules for medical students at the University of Dundee in years 2 & 3, to give basic physical grounding knowledge suitable for clinicians and make them aware of the issues confronting the medical physicist.
Some lecture materials are available through this website for students. Use "Save Link As" to save them to your own computer:
