Welcome!

Welcome to the University of Dundee & NHS Tayside Department of Medical Phyics (we usually just call it Dundee Medical Physics, for obvious reasons of brevity).

Our Web site will hopefully provide everything you want to know about us and our services, but if not feel free to get in touch (all the details below in the Contacts section) and we'll do our best to deal with any queries.

What we do

Medical Physics is an extremely varied discipline with a wide range of applications concerned with technology in medicine. The department is principally funded by the National Health Service and has a large service workload, but there is also a thriving (and increasing) component of academic research, both through contracts and postgraduate student projects. Indeed, many of the projects arise directly from exciting developments in the clinical service and we aim to select these where possible.

The department deals with its various duties and interests through a variety of different sections specialising in a range of areas, and these are detailed below...

Departmental Sections

The following table gives a brief description of each section's function, but just click on the section title to go to the section's web page for more details...

Instrumentation dealing with repair, maintenance and monitoring of hospital equipment, plus research and development of new devices and departmental IT and ordering support
Nuclear Medicine dealing with radioactive tracer enhancement to various monitoring and imaging techniques, and including supply and care of radionuclides
Radiation Physics dealing with monitoring of radiation sources in the local area and advice and help with installations
Radiotherapy Physics providing technical service and support for the area's Radiotherapy and Oncology services, including service, repair, dosimetry and general Quality Assurance
Vascular Studies providing detailed physiological measurement to aid with diagnosis, treatment and follow-up by vascular surgeons
Photobiology dealing with monitoring and QA for photobiological skin treatment using UV equipment
Radiobiology primarily a research arm assessing effects of radiation on living organisms
Administration providing clerical and administrative backup for all the other departmental functions
