Some notes on the Dundee Medical Physics home page design

Vistors from the distant past may remember the old image used here, based on the Monopoly® game board. Alas, Hasbro decided that free advertising for their product was not good enough a justification to allow us to go on using it, so it had to go. Hence, a new MP web page design

Medical Physics Welcome Image

All the work was done by Peter Clinch, the departmental IT Officer, originally on a Sun Ultra 30 running Solaris 2.6, with the tool of choice being the GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program). The GIMP has come a long way (and several release versions) since this was originally done, with a recent update in September 2006 using 2.2.8 to create a PNG file with "NHS Tayside" in place of "Tayside University Hsopitals", where the original was created as a GIF image with version 1.0.4

The head used is taken from an example provided with ITT Visual Information Systems' IDL (Interactive Data Language) data visualisation program, which we use a lot in the department. The image is taken from a stack of 3D MRI which was rendered and cut using the IDL program. Thanks to ITTVis for their permission to use the image.

Aside from the graphics, the original markup was done using SoftQuad Hot Metal Pro 3.0, again running on the Sun, though that's long since got obsolete and most edits these days (like changing everything to CSS) are done by straight text hacks to the HTML and new material worked on with Quanta Plus running under SuSE Linux 10.
