Levels of Study


Introductory course

Some participants may choose to start with an introduction to medical education through the study of four units (one each from curriculum development, assessment, teaching and learning and instructional materials development). Twelve credits will be awarded on completion of the units.


Certificate
The Certificate in Medical Education will be awarded on successfully completing 20 units (60 credits). Twelve of these units are core units which must be completed by all participants, the remaining 8 may be selected by participants. The Certificate recognises mastery of some of the key topics in curriculum development, assessment,teaching and learning and instructional materials development.


Certificate (adapted for anaesthetists)
The Centre offers a Certificate in Medical Education specially adapted for anaesthetists. This involves the completion of 12 core units, a clinical teaching unit, 2 individually selected units, 4 units specifically developed for anaesthetists and a 2-day short course. This is offered in collaboration with The Royal College of Anaesthetists. The certificate for anaesthetists can also be built on by those wishing to progress to Diploma or Master’s level.


Diploma

The Diploma involves the study of a further 20 units in addition to the completion of the Certificate. The further study will include additional core units plus optional topics. A total of 40 units (120 credits) is required for the award of the Diploma qualification.


Master’s

The Master’s Degree requires more in-depth study of a topic and a total of a further 60 credits beyond the Diploma. These 60 credits can be gained after the award of the Diploma by submission of a dissertation/ project based on a programme of work in a selected area of study (a total of 180 credits).


Research degrees

The Centre also offers research degrees at Master’s and Doctoral level. A restricted number of PhD places are available. Candidates for these programmes should supply full details of their previous academic awards including evidence of their research abilities. Acceptance will be at the discretion of the Board of Studies of the Centre for Medical Education..
