Research Opportunities

Candidates for a research degree follow a couse of research for a prescribed period which will vary depending on the degree and on whether they are studying on a full-time or part-time basis. While full time study tends to be more common, part-time study enables graduates living locally to obtain supervision and arrange their studies to accommodate work, domestic and other commitments.

Choice of Topics

Prospective research degree students should look at the research pages on this website to see the range of research topics available. Most higher degrees specify that applicants should normally be Honours graduates or possess other qualifications which are considered equivalent.

Periods of Study

The number of study periods needed for a higher degree will usually be achieved in three years for the PhD or one year for Masters degree by research. Part-time students will take longer. Time is also allowed for additional work and writing up.

Periods of Study
Degree Standard Period of Study Maximum Permitted Period of Study
PhD (Full Time) Three years Four years
PhD (Part Time) Five years Six years
Masters (Full Time) One year Three years
Masters (Part Time) Two years Five years
