Suture Safety and Integrity Equipment (SUSIE)
Colon and bowel surgery is one of the most common forms of procedures carried out in the UK today and as such accounts for significant NHS spending. Major problems can occur if a sectioned bowel is not correctly sutured following surgery. This causes serious and potentially fatal infection and usually involves costly and tricky reoperation to rectify the leakage from the bowel. Leakage however is often difficult to detect during surgery. We therefore intend to research a novel technique to provide surgeons with a tool to identify intraoperatively any potential leakage of the bowel through imperfect suturing.A successful outcome will result in a proptotype system to significantly reduce the risks, distress, disruption and costs of failed suturing.
