Advanced Stent Design for Improved Healing and Leak Prevention in the Gastrointestinal Tract
Stent
Stents are used in gastrointestinal surgery primarily as a way to open up passageways which have become blocked as a result of growth of tissue into the tract. In this regard they can often be quite succesful as this procedure can often be carried out using minimal access techniques and without the need to cut into tissue.
Growths however often do have to be removed surgically if they are cancerous, too fast growing or two large for a stent to cope with. The resulting surgical wound however can be liable to leak resulting in costly and unpleasant reoperation. This project aims to examine issues which will enable stents to prevent leaking immediately post surgery while encouraging wound healing to ensure long term integrity of the surgical site.
