Artificial Palpation of Tissue
model of tissue
in shear
Palpating tissue is a long established technique to determine the presence and nature of anomalies beneath the surface of internal and external tissue masses. This technique however can not be used in minimally invasive situations as the surgeon no longer has direct access to the tissue and must operate through long, rigid instruments.
machine
The aim of this research is to develop simple, measurable, techniques using optical and force monitoring to determine the nature of tissue and inclusions near the surface of internal organs. This involves a twin strand approach using both tissue modelling and empirical techniques. Ultimately this research will produce an exemplar tissue examination tool and intelligence system to demonstrate artificial palpation and diagnosis, pointing toward development of commercial devices for minimally invasive surgery.
