The purpose of the proposed research is to investigate the design issues relating to the development of a mobile robot able to travel along the colon. Such a robot would be used for inspection of the walls of the colon for cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions.

The proposed methods for deployment and recovery of the robot are entirely novel. Because of this it is intended only to develop an exemplar system capable of demonstrating the feasibility of these methods. This robot will possess only a rudimentary inspection capability, but will pave the way towards a fully functional system with full inspection and intervention functionality.
