For me the mechanical engineering degree was extremely enjoyable in both the academic and social aspects. The Department has very close ties to industry, imparting a taste and a passion for what real engineering is about. Due to the smaller class sizes, the teaching standards were extremely high giving each lecture a personal feel, it also developed a really sense of class spirit. This well thought out degree kick started and nurtured my enthusiasm for engineering and gave me clearly defined path for the future.

After graduation I was offered a three year PhD in the Medical Engineering Research Institute. I am currently in my second year, developing a smart glove to ease the pain of Raynaud's sufferers. My research has currently produced two possible products which will be patented and possible marketed under spin off companies.

Since I graduated form the University of Dundee, I have been employed by a company called Mechserv Ltd. that specialises in the manufacture and refurbishment of well service equipment. These are self contained units that do a range of jobs from nitrogen conversion to mixing cement slurry.

I graduated in 2003 with a BEng (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering and it was through contacts at the university that helped secure the job at Mechserv. I am part of a government scheme called the KTP which ties local businesses with universities to improve relations between the two whilst helping the company to increase its profitability in some way. With this scheme I not only get industry experience but also receive management training, an NVQ level 4 in management and I also have a substantial training budget to use for my own personal development.

As I enjoyed my time at Dundee University I was more than happy to be involved once again with the department and to use their extensive knowledge to better my career. Not only did I learn a great deal within the Mechanical Engineering Department at Dundee, I also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere that the lecturers created which I feel greatly enhanced the learning process.
