Research interests

I have now been a full time NHS consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for 7 years. I started working in Ninewells Hospital in September 2005.

I have general commitments to obstetrics and gynaecology, including major and day case gynaecology operating lists, gynaecology clinic, elective caesarean section list, labour ward sessions and on-call commitment for obstetrics and gynaecology. I am the audit facilitator in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and participate in gynaecology clinical governance committee.

I have a specialist interest in reproductive medicine. I have set-up a dedicated infertility service in Perth. This includes a fortnightly infertility clinic, a monthly assisted conception clinic and a monthly day surgery list. At Ninewells, I contribute to the work in the assisted conception and general infertility service. I perform specialised infertility surgery, such as reversal of sterilisation and tubal surgery. I have set-up a 3 monthly reproductive endocrine meeting, jointly with physicians and gynaecologists, in order to improve patient care pathways between specialities. I lead on post-graduate education, audit and medical quality management in the assisted conception unit.

I have a specialist interest in pelvic floor dysfunction. I have developed the service for the management of women with uterovaginal prolapse. I have set-up multidisciplinary educational meetings. I having implemented a protocol for outpatient management, developed patient information sheets (ring pessary and surgical management) and set-up a nurse-run ring pessary service in Forfar. I continually enhanced my surgical skills, by attending surgical training courses and one-to-one surgical training. I have obtained funding for the purchase of meshes in women with severe or recurrent prolapse. My gynaecological colleagues refer women for surgical management under my care, including sacrospinous fixations for vault prolapse and mesh insertions. I have talked at GP and hospital meetings about these service developments.

University Commitment

I am the Phase 2 System Convener for Reproduction. In this role, I am involved in updating course material for 2007 and developing new course materials in-line with new systems teaching in the revised curriculum from 2008. I am involved in supervising specialist study modules and MSC projects.
